Before you start applying for jobs, register as a job-seeker with the government. This is free, and it opens doors — job listings, free training courses, and it matters later if you ever claim unemployment benefits. Here's exactly how to do it, step by step, in simple language.
SOC vs SEPE — Which One Do You Actually Need?
These are two separate government bodies, and they do different things. Don't confuse them.
Catalonia's own employment service. This is where you register as a job-seeker. It also runs free training courses, career help, and manages job listings through its local offices (oficines de treball). If you live in Catalonia, THIS is where you register — not directly with SEPE.
The national employment service. Its main job is paying out unemployment benefits (paro) and related subsidies. In Catalonia, you don't register with SEPE directly for the initial jobseeker registration — that's handled by SOC. SEPE becomes relevant later if you're claiming a specific benefit payment.
How to Register, Step by Step
Your NIE number, your Social Security number (if you have one already), and — if you're a non-EU national — your work permit (permiso de trabajo). Section 3 below explains this in more detail.
Monday to Friday, 8:30 to 14:00 (2:00 PM). This line is genuinely staffed by real people from the local work offices (oficines de treball), and this is specifically the route for people with an NIE.
They will guide you through the registration over the phone. Basic Spanish helps here — if you're not confident yet, our Language Series (Post #3) has the exact phrases for calls and appointments like this.
You can register online directly, through the "Inscribir la demanda de empleo" section of the SOC website — but only the first time, and only with a digital certificate or Cl@ve ID. Most readers of this series will genuinely be using the phone route above instead, since NIE is far more common at this stage.
What to Have Ready Before You Call
This must be linked to a valid residence authorization — that's your work permit, student visa, or similar.
If you've already worked in Spain, you'll have this. If you're registering before your first job, you may not have one yet — this is fine, but confirm your specific situation when you call.
This proves you're legally allowed to work in Spain. Have the details of your specific permit type ready.
After You're Registered — Don't Forget to Renew
Once registered, you get a document called the DARDE (Documento de Alta y Renovación de la Demanda de Empleo). This is your official proof of registration — keep it somewhere safe.
Your registration isn't a one-time thing — it needs to be renewed on a date SOC will tell you. If you miss your renewal date, you genuinely lose your registration history and have to start over from zero. This can affect your eligibility for benefits later. Write your renewal date down somewhere you'll actually check it.
Registering is free and voluntary for most people — the one exception is if you're receiving unemployment benefit payments, in which case staying registered is genuinely mandatory, not optional.
This genuinely doesn't work for first-time registration — the online form is for DNI holders only. Use the phone number instead.
This genuinely resets your registration history if missed. Write the date down somewhere you'll see it.
In Catalonia, SOC is where you register as a job-seeker. SEPE is who pays benefits later. They're genuinely different offices.
